Samuel L. Abbate MD, CDE
Board Certified in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism

Dr. Abbate graduated from the University of Illinois School of Medicine at Chicago, in 1984. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation where he also served as Chief Medical Resident. At the University of Washington in Seattle, he completed specialty training in Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. Dr. Abbate is Board Certified in Internal Medicine as well as Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism. He has practiced endocrinology since 1991. Dr. Abbate has served as a National Board Member of the American Diabetes Association as well as serving as a National Board Member of the ADA’s Research Foundation. He also served for six years on the National Diabetes Education Program National Steering Committee and most recently was the National Chairman of the National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators. He believes strongly in the importance ofABIM-Endo-2008 patient self-management education as essential to achieving the best clinical outcomes.

Dr. Abbate is certified in clinical densitometry (reading bone mineral density studies) which enhances his care of patients with osteoporosis and other metabolic bone disorders.

He is also certified in thyroid ultrasound and has been performing fine needle aspirations of the thyroid since 1990.

Expertise in the treatment of diabetes, hormone disorders and metabolic problems (for example lipid disorders) is achieved by special training in an endocrinology fellowship. Mastery of these areas is demonstrated by becoming board certified through the American Board of Internal Medicine. No other certification is recognized by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Hospital Organizations or the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Anne Abbate, RN, CDE

Anne J. Abbate, BSN, RN, CDE

Anne has been a certified diabetes educator since 1991. She first worked as a diabetes educator at Children’s Hospital in Seattle where she developed expertise in working with children with diabetes. She has worked with patients of all ages in both hospital and clinic settings. Anne has extensive experience working with intensive insulin regimens including insulin pumps and continuous glucose sensors. She also enjoys working with women during their pregnancies. Anne helps patients overcome the stress of managing their diabetes through her quiet and gentle manner.


Sarah is our official clinic mascot and unofficial therapy dog. Her expertise is in putting patients at ease with a wag of her tail or a gentle nudge of her nose. She is a rescue dog and so understands how trying life can be. She faithfully comes to work each day to encourage our patients.
